I-287 Stop In Greenburgh Leads To DWI Charge For Fairfield Man

A Town of Fairfield man is facing multiple charges after police conducted a traffic stop on I-287 in Westchester.

The incident occurred on Sunday, Feb. 3 at around 1:20 a.m. State Police stopped a vehicle on I-287 in the town of Greenburgh for numerous vehicle and traffic violations.

During the stop, the driver, 58-year-old James A. Cheney of Fairfield appeared to be intoxicated and gave police probable cause to search the vehicle.

Police discovered approximately 34 grams of marijuana during the search. Cheney was arrested, transported and processed at SP Tarrytown where his BAC was found to be .11%. Cheney was charged with the following:

  • Fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor
  • Driving while intoxicated, an unclassified misdemeanor
  • Multiple vehicle and traffic violations

Cheney was turned over to a sober third party and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Greenburgh Court on Friday, Feb. 15.
